ITINERARY n.2

THE NUORO PROVINCE BETWEEN ART AND LITERATURE

Nuoro – Galtellì – Dorgali

Half Day Trip

In Nuoro, the old district of San Pietro opens towards Piazza Sebastiano Satta, arranged by Costantino Nivola in 1967, the square is characterized by contrast between granite sculptures and pre-existing architecture. Not far away, in a nineteenth-century building at no. 15 of via Satta, behind Corso Garibaldi, is the headquarters of the MAN.

Art Museum of the Nuoro Province

Inaugurated in 1999, the building houses, on the first and second floor, a hundred works by Sardinian artists of the twentieth century, and on the ground floor and on the top floor there are spaces for temporary exhibitions.
If you walk along Corso Garibaldi towards Piazza Giovanni and cross Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, entering Via Guerrazzi you will reach Via Antonio Mereu where you will find the Museum of Life and Sardinian Folk Traditions. The Museum, whose path is divided into 18 rooms, collects clothes and objects typical of Sardinian life and crafts. Traditional clothes from different countries are preserved, especially from Barbagia. The polychrome fabrics, the cut and the fine embroidery originally characterize the traditional dress of each country. Carpets, blankets, crate covers, saddlebags testify to the different weaving techniques.

Continuing then at number 42 of Via Grazia Deledda is located the museum-home where the writer Grazia Deledda was born and where personal objects, photographs, letters, first Italian and foreign editions of her works are kept, autographs, press notes and various testimonies of his life and activity and the reproduction of the diploma Nobel Prize for Literature awarded in 1926.

Along the Via Chironi you arrive at the Viale della Solitudine where there is the Solitude Church, built to a design by Giovanni Ciusa Romagna between 1947 and 1954, on the site of an earlier seventeenth-century church dear to Grazia Deledda, which has been buried here since 1959.

Taking from Nuoro the SS 129, after 21 km you reach the center of Galtelli, which played a significant role in the Middle Ages when it was the seat of the diocese. On the edge of the town, in the cemetery, stand the unfinished cathedral and the ancient church of San Pietro, decorated with frescoes in the thirteenth century and described by Grazia Deledda in his novel Canne al vento.

After 21 Km of the SS 125 you can reach Dorgali, a famous tourist resort that hosts, among other things, the Salvatore Fancello Museum. Housed in the Casa Dore, located in Corso Umberto, the museum is dedicated to Salvatore Fancello, ceramist of Dorgali died in 1941 during the Second World War. The collection exhibits part of his intense production. Of great interest is a large drawing, made on the occasion of the wedding of the sculptor friend Costantino Nivola, where rural scenes with fantastic animals are represented.

Enjoy your artistic and literary outing!
