ORGOSOLO

August 15th is the most important day of the year for Orgosolo.
The Feast of the Blessed Virgin Assunta is celebrated with a prayer and a procession that involves the entire town, drawing thousands of visitors eager to admire one of the most beautiful traditional outfits on the island.
The dressing ritual is the most intimate and private moment, not open to the public.
It is a timeless moment when the outfit, passed down through generations or lent exclusively among townspeople, is carefully worn.
Dressing is a complex process that requires the help of three skilled individuals. The most challenging part is arranging the headpiece, called “Su Lionzu,” which is dyed with saffron and made from silk produced by silkworms raised in the village.
It’s 5:00 PM, and Mariangela is ready. Her mother stands behind her, watching with emotion. Now, she can step outside to accompany the Assunta in the procession. Later, there will be singing and dancing to celebrate both the end of the agricultural season and the beginning of a new one.

NUORO

TRADITIONAL OUTFIT IN THE HOUSE OF GRAZIA DELEDDA, NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE IN 1926

In honor of Grazia Deledda, born in Nuoro in 1871 and the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, the dressing of the traditional Nùoro outfit was performed inside her birthplace, now a museum.
The outfit worn is an original from the late 19th century.
It consists of the orbace skirt (Sa Tunica), the black apron with floral decorations (Franda), the bodice (Pala a supra), the bonnet (Sa carretta), and the white linen or cotton headscarf (Sa benda).
The most important event of the year, when women, men, and horsemen parade through the streets of the city, is the “Festa del Redentore”, held every year on the last Sunday of August.

DESULO

THE PRIORESSES AT CORPUS DOMINI

The day of Corpus Domini (1) is very important for Desulo.
The women, called “Prioresses,” wear the traditional outfit to join the procession.
The dressing ritual is always an intimate and private moment, taking place inside their homes with the assistance of at least one other person.
Maria and Angela get dressed together with the help of their mother.
The most challenging moment is when they put on the extremely tight jacket, “Su Cippone.” Then comes the embroidered bonnet, “Su Cucuddu,” followed by the black silk brocade veil, “Su Cappucciu.” The skirt is made of orbace.
Now they are ready to join the other Prioresses and the young girls, also dressed in traditional attire, to carry the banners in procession from San Sebastiano Church to Sant’Antonio Abate Church.

(1) Corpus Domini does not have a fixed date each year. It is observed on the Thursday of the second week after Pentecost.
For convenience, it is celebrated on the second Sunday after Pentecost (usually falling between late May and mid-June).

ORISTANO

LA SARTIGLIA AND SU COMPONIDORI

In Oristano, on the last Sunday and Tuesday of Carnival, the Sartiglia takes place. The Sunday joust follows the traditional rituals overseen by the Gremio (ancient guild) of Farmers, while the Tuesday joust is organized by the Gremio of Carpenters.
On the day of the Sartiglia, after the dressing ceremony of Su Componidori, the leader of the race, a procession of knights forms and heads toward Via della Cattedrale, where the Corsa alla Stella (Star Joust) takes place.
Ancient documents confirm the existence of the Sartiglia as early as 1546.
Su Componidori is the undisputed protagonist of the Sartiglia, and his dressing ritual is a magical and emotional moment. Seated on a chair like a throne, he is dressed by the Massaieddas, who carefully assemble his attire, including the costume, mask, top hat, and veil.
From that moment, he officially becomes Su Componidori. His horse is brought close to the stage where the dressing took place, and he mounts it—because once the mask is placed, he can no longer touch the ground until late into the evening, when the event concludes.
Only then can he dismount and sit back in the chair where he was dressed, awaiting the undressing ritual.
